13-year-old girl dies following Medina County crash involving dump truck

Officials say a minivan failed to yield at an intersection and was hit by a truck. The van's teen passenger died from her injuries at an area hospital.

CHATHAM, Ohio — A 13-year-old girl is dead following a crash involving a dump truck Friday afternoon in Medina County.

According to a release from the Medina County Sheriff's Office, the teen was riding in the front passenger seat of a Dodge minivan headed west on Chatham Road (state Route 162) in Chatham Township. The driver — a 38-year-old woman from Portage County — allegedly failed to yield at the intersection with Avon Lake Road (state Route 83), causing the van to be hit by a southbound dump truck around 3:50 p.m. Photos from the area show the intersection is a two-way stop, with no stop signs on Route 83.

Coincidentally, the wreck occurred just a block away from the Chatham Township Fire Department. Firefighters and paramedics were able to extract the girl from the minivan and rush her to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Lodi Hospital, but she died there from her injuries. Her name is not being released at this time.

Per officials, the driver of the minivan was also taken to Lodi Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the dump truck as well as his passenger were not hurt.

The case remains under investigation, with multiple fire departments from across the assisting at the scene. The sheriff's office has not indicated if any charges will be filed.
