CLEVELAND — Five young people ranging in age between 12 and 18 have been arrested in connection to an alleged carjacking and attempted arson in Granger Township last year, the Medina County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.
According to the sheriff's office, all five suspects were younger than 18 years old on Dec. 1, 2023, the date of the alleged incident. One of the youths, Mohamadu Touray, has since turned 18. The rest of the suspects, who are all from Franklin County, were not named due to their age.
All five have been charged with aggravated robbery, arson and receiving stolen property.
Authorities allege the youths attempted to set fire to a car that the group had allegedly previously stolen from Franklin County in a parking lot on Ridge Road in Granger Township. The sheriff's office said they allegedly fled to a gas station on Ridge Road near I-271 and assaulted a 72-year-old man and stole his keys before driving away in the man's car.
Touray is awaiting extradition to the Medina County Jail. One of the youths is being held at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center, while the three others are detained in the juvenile detention center in Medina County.
Detectives pinned the suspects to the alleged incident through DNA and other technology, the sheriff's office said.
