Drive-thru baby shower in Brunswick sets example of how to party during social distancing

One local couple was surprised over the weekend with an improvised celebration to welcome their new addition.

BRUNSWICK, Ohio — No party? No problem.

After years of trying to conceive, Danielle and Dan Pokorny were overjoyed to find out that they were adding a new member to their family-- a baby girl -- in 2020, with the help of IVF.

The couple however did not expect for their baby shower to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and Governor Mike Dewine’s ‘stay at home’ order. Danielle’s twin-sister Denise made the call to cancel the event with no plans to reschedule any time soon. That’s when fate stepped in.

Noticing that this past weekend was slated for beautiful weather, the Brunswick couple’s family and friends jumped into action and planned a drive-thru baby shower.

Propped out in lawn chairs in the driveway, close family and friends drove into the cul de sac honking and waving at the (understandably) emotional couple. Dropping off gifts on a table at the end of the yard and cheering for the parents-to-be.

A friend of the couple said one of the invited guests arrived with silly string in hand, popping up out of the sun-roof of the car, and spraying it in celebration.

“Danielle has embraced these trying times with such grace and humility,” said Danielle’s lifetime friend Carolyn Kutcha, “She refers to her baby girl as her little warrior, who withstood every hurdle thrown at her and will ultimately come into this world in the midst of a pandemic.”

The baby is expected to arrive in May.
