MEDINA, Ohio — A Highland Middle School student was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly sharing a "graphic" and "inappropriate" image with classmates at a football game on Friday.
The arrest comes after Highland's DARE Officer Deputy Nicole Embury and the Medina County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation.
Upon initial investigations, Highland Middle School officials found that the student was "making comments to other students on social media and through a Google Classroom account, threatening anyone who reported the actions to the school and law enforcement," said Highland Local School District Superintendent Catherine Aukerman in a letter to parents.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Highland Middle School Principal Rob Henry or the Medina County Sheriff's Office.
Below is a copy of the letter that parents at Highland Middle School received from Aukerman.
"Over the weekend, the school district was made aware of a Highland Middle School student reportedly sharing an inappropriate and graphic image to other middle school students at the football game on Friday night. Numerous parents and students reached out and reported the incident to HMS Principal, Mr. Rob Henry. The district immediately began to investigate the matter and the student was not permitted to attend school on Monday.
"On Monday, student witnesses were interviewed by the school and social media evidence was gathered. This information was turned over to Deputy Nicole Embury, Highland’s DARE Officer and School Resource Officer and the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. As the investigation continued, the district became aware that the student was making comments to other students on social media and through a Google Classroom account, threatening anyone who reported the actions to the school and law enforcement.
"This afternoon, the student was placed under arrest and is currently being held at the Medina County Juvenile Detention Center, pending arraignment.
"We want to commend our students and their parents for coming forward with this important information. We continue to stress, if you see something, say something and our students and parents did just that. If you or your student have any additional information that we should be aware of, please contact Mr. Henry or the Sheriff’s Office."
