MEDINA, Ohio — A Northeast Ohio city has received national recognition from HGTV as one of America's "best small towns to visit for Christmas."
For 39 years, Medina has flipped the switch for the holiday season in style.
"I think Medina's got all the right elements for an amazing holiday experience," said George Sam, executive director of Main Street Medina.
In the center of Medina's Public Square sits a gazebo, which is currently filled with a massive Christmas tree that's decorated with ornaments and lights.
"This one is next to perfect," said Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell.
The festive Christmas decorations around Medina paint a picture of a Christmas movie.
"I think people like the charm of Medina," said Sam.
Mayor Hanwell told 3News that everyone in Medina is warm and welcoming towards visitors. For their main Christmas event, Mayor Hanwell estimated there were 20,000 to 25,000 people in and around the Square.
HGTV said Medina "shines" during the holidays.
"It's a great recognition for our city," said Mayor Hanwell.
Medina's mayor credited the community with putting together the festive decorations and events.
HGTV recognized Medina's Castle Noel, candlelight Christmas walks and the Medina Performing Arts Center as options for visitors to enjoy while in the city.
Castle Noel has been in Medina for 10 years, giving visitors a first-hand look at thousands of toys from the 1940's to present day.
"We are the single largest collection of Christmas movie props in the world," said Castle Noel owner Mark Klaus.
Yes, you read that correctly. Castle Noel's owner is a Klaus, pronounced exactly like Santa Claus.
"I was born with it, that's a fact," said Klaus.
Klaus told 3News tours should be booked in advance, and typically take two hours to go through the various exhibits.
"People need to feel just pure joy," said Klaus. "So, we want when you walk through the door that for the next two hours you feel nothing but joy."
Medina is a city of tradition. It's a place where those looking for Christmas spirit can find joy.
