In new details released Tuesday morning, Brunswick police said the situation started around 2:04 p.m. when a woman called police to report she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.

When officers arrived at the scene, Brunswick police say they tried to make contact with the suspect at the woman’s apartment in the 4200 block of Manhattan Avenue.

The suspect -- identified as 37-year-old Matthew Rucker of Cleveland -- was allegedly armed with a pistol when police say he “retreated into the apartment and refused to exit.”

Negotiations continued into the evening hours. Police say Rucker eventually came out of the apartment around 9:22 p.m.

He was taken into custody and charged with assault.

Rucker, who police identify as a Tier III sex offender, was later taken to the Medina County Jail. Police say additional charges are pending.
