WAYNE COUNTY, OHIO, Ohio — A 15-month-old child was fatally struck by a pickup truck on Township Road 73 in Wayne County on Friday night.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says that it was notified of a serious injury crash at 7:57 p.m. The incident occurred on Township Road 73 (Eby Road), just south of State Route 604 in Milton Township.
An on-scene investigation revealed that the incident occurred when a silver 2019 Ford F-150 pickup was traveling south on Township Road 73 (Eby Road) from State Route 604. The truck proceeded to strike a 15-month-old child who was standing in the road. The child was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Further investigation determined that the child had walked away from a nearby home. The child's 17-year-old caretaker was unaware that he was in the road at the time of the accident. The driver of the Ford F-150, as well as his passenger were not hurt. As is standard procedure, the F-150 was towed from the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
