A 16-year-old swimmer died earlier this week after being caught in dangerous waves and drowning at Walnut Beach in Ashtabula County.

Authorities say Micah Nugent was caught in 3 to 5 foot waves and pulled out of the water by the breakwall. He was taken first to Ashtabula County Medical Center, then to MetroHealth Medical Center, but sadly succumbed to his drowning injuries.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the Nugent family with funeral arrangements.

According to the Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium, Micah is the 26th person to drown in Lake Erie in 2018. 7 of those have taken place this month, including 5 in Northern Ohio.
