WOOSTER, Ohio — Two suspects are in custody after kidnapping a woman in Wayne County, shooting at a witness and fleeing to Kentucky.
According to a release from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the 4000 block of Canal Road in Wooster Township at approximately 1:46 a.m. on Tuesday morning for a report of suspicious activity.
Investigators discovered that a 24-year-old female was forced into a vehicle. As the suspects attempted to flee the area, a witness attempted to help the victim. Shots were fired from the suspect's vehicle, at which point the witness stopped their pursuit.
Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, plus officers from the Wooster and Orrville police departments joined in efforts to locate the vehicle and the victim.
Kentucky State Police were also made aware of the search after OSHP troopers discovered a cell phone ping on I-75 in Lexington.
At approximately 9:08 a.m., a Kentucky State Police trooper located the vehicle in Madison County, KY, initiated a traffic stop, and took two suspects into custody. A handgun was also recovered from the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 29-year-old Anthony Grinnel of Cleveland. He was charged with unlawful imprisonment of the first degree. A 27-year-old passenger, William L. Tate of Newland, North Carolina, was arrested for "possession of a defaced firearm."
The victim was found safe, having only suffered minor injuries.
