NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a 4-year-old girl is dead following a crash on Interstate 77 in Tuscarawas County late Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say the wreck occurred just after 5:45 p.m. in Franklin Township, when the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of his car while headed north on the highway. The vehicle went off the left side of the road and hit the grassy median, where it flipped over.
Per authorities, the girl died from her injuries at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover. Her name has not yet been released.
The driver, a 38-year-old man from Dover, as well as a 7-year-old male passenger were both taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in Canton with minor injuries. 3News is choosing not to name the driver at this time since no criminal charges have been filed (and state troopers have not indicated there will be any).
While the crash remains under investigation, the OHSP stresses alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
