MINERVA, Ohio — Sixty calves died after a barn in Columbiana County broke out in flames on Friday night.
Sandy Creek Joint Fire District Chief Aaron Stoller confirmed that officials got a call around 5:15 p.m. on Friday, July 15, for a fire at White Leather Farm in Columbiana County.
When crews arrived, electrical lines were already on the ground.
Officials confirmed that 60 calves died in the fire, and another 20-25 were able to escape. The barn on fire held thousands of bales of straw.
Fire crews worked hard to ensure that none of the other barns connected caught on fire. They were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the milking parlour.
Thankfully, no individuals or firefighters were injured in the fire.
To help put out the fire, eight neighboring fire departments came to the rescue. Fire crews eventually put out the fire entirely by 10:30 p.m.
Sandy Creek Joint Fire District was aided by the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Hanoverton Fire Department, North Georgetown Fire Department, Homeworth Fire, Augusta Township Volunteer Fire Department, Nimishillen Township Fire Department and Great Trail Fire District.
At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown. Officials are currently investigating the fire.
