DeWine announces grants for traffic safety projects across Northeast Ohio

Funding will go toward projects planned in Cuyahoga, Huron, Lake, Richland and Stark counties.

CLEVELAND — Gov. Mike DeWine has announced grant funding for traffic safety projects statewide, including five projects aimed at reducing crashes in Northeast Ohio, his office announced Thursday.

Gov. DeWine and the Ohio Department of Transportation will allocate nearly $87 million across the state.

Planned projects include a $2,317,363 commitment to extend the variable speed limit zone on the "Lake Effect Corridor" on I-90 in Lake County by six miles just west of the State Route 306 interchange. The state says that area, which receives significantly more snow than many areas across Northeast Ohio, has seen a 35% decrease in crashes in stretches where the variable speed limit zone has already been introduced.

Other projects include upgrades to the intersection at I-71 and Pearl Road in Cuyahoga County and new roundabouts in Huron and Stark counties.

“ODOT’s mission includes building and maintaining a transportation system that is safe. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously,” said ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks. “However, we also need drivers to do some very basic things like follow the speed limit, buckle up, drive sober, and above all pay attention.”

Here's a full breakdown of the traffic safety projects coming to Northeast Ohio, according to ODOT.
