Documents show Discovery Tours repaid family members before filing for bankruptcy

Documents reveal as many as 5,600 families in roughly two dozen school districts made deposits for trips that were canceled.

Documents show Discovery Tours made substantial repayments to family members who worked there before filing for bankruptcy.

According to the company's Chapter 7 bankruptcy paperwork, Discovery Tours, which booked class trips, paid its owner, Alfred Cipolletti, $103,000 for a loan.

Vice President Joseph Cipolletti received more than $530,000 for a loan repayment and other costs.

The list also includes other family members.

We've also learned Discovery Tours likely canceled a class trip for Port Clinton schools as early as February, but never informed the district.

According to bankruptcy documents filed, Discovery Tours has $1.3 million dollars in assets, but owes $3.9 million dollars in liabilities.

Discovery Tours first came under fire last week after abruptly canceling Mentor's 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. On Friday, the company announced that it had suspended its operations 'effective immediately,' adding that 'all future trips are canceled.'
