DOYLESTOWN, Ohio — Doylestown police have confirmed that Nate Samples, who served as an officer with the department as well as the school resource officer for Chippewa Local Schools, resigned following an arrest for drunk driving last month in Wayne County.

According to a Lawrence Township police report, the 41-year-old Samples was arrested in the overnight hours of Nov. 24. Officers say Samples "committed multiple lanes violations" while on Alabama Avenue, then put his right turn signal on where were was no driveway or roadway for him to turn into.

After pulling over Samples, police say officers "observed bloodshot/glossy eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage." Samples allegedly told police twice that he hadn't consumed any alcoholic beverages. He refused to perform a field sobriety test and was arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI).

Samples was arraigned in Massillon Municipal Court on Nov. 27 and pleaded not guilty. He was given a $2,000 recognizance bond and will be back in court on Dec. 20.

According to Doylestown Police Chief Casey Tester, Samples resigned from the department the day after the arrest.

"I am grateful for the many positive contributions Officer Samples made to our agency, our school system, and our community. I am diligently working with our School Superintendent to find our next School Resource Officer. In the interim, we are staffing the SRO position with patrol officers to ensure the safety of our school," Tester told 3News in a statement.

Chippewa Local Schools Superintendent Todd Osborn added the following:

"We have learned that our School Resource Officer, Nate Samples, has resigned from the Doylestown Police Department. As our district contracts with the Doylestown Police Department for SRO services, Officer Samples will no longer be serving in our schools. We appreciate his contributions during his time with Chippewa Local Schools and look forward to collaborating with the Doylestown Police Department to identify our next School Resource Officer."

Records show Samples has been a police officer in Northeast Ohio since 2005. Before joining the Doylestown Police Department in 2020, Samples worked as a police officer in Barberton for 13 years. He also spent time with the Boston Heights and New Franklin police departments.
