FAA report: Plane engine lost power prior to deadly Apple Creek crash

The crash killed the pilot and co-pilot.

APPLE CREEK, Ohio — The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that the plane involved in a deadly crash in Apple Creek lost engine power.

The Douglas DC-3 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Stoltzfus Airfield on Jan. 21. A witness said smoke could be seen coming from the plane's left engine before it descended and struck power lines, crashing into a front yard along Hackett Road.

According to an FAA report issued to WKYC on Wednesday, the plane's left engine lost power during takeoff, causing it to crash 200 yards from the runway. 

The plane's pilot, Brian Stoltzfus, 55, and co-pilot Curtis Wilkerson, 56, were both killed in the crash. They were en route to the Akron-Canton Airport.
