SUGARCREEK, Ohio — The fire that tore through Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market last week in Tuscarawas County was caused by a lightning strike, the Ohio Department of Commerce confirmed to WKYC Thursday.
Officials say the strike occurred "the night before the fire," which truly began around 4 a.m. on Aug. 21. Fire departments from four surrounding counties assisted Sugarcreek in putting out the blaze.
When the smoke cleared, much of the 50,000-square-foot building was deemed a total loss. The owners plan to rebuild, but when that could be completed remains a mystery.
In the meantime, a GoFundMe has been set up to help the 60 vendors affected by the blaze.
