HUDSON, Ohio — The city of Hudson is fishing for a new mayor this week after the former man who held the position resigned over controversy regarding statements he made about ice fishing leading to prostitution.
At Tuesday's Hudson City Council meeting, things got a little heated when discussing former mayor Craig Shubert's comments on ice fishing, shanties and prostitution.
Shubert resigned, but not before he became a meme online. His colorful words also went viral on social media.
Now, however, some Hudson residents feel their community has to pick up the pieces of shame.
“We have had quite a bit of press recently and it's not been positive," says Hudson resident Sarah Viar.
Many have said Shubert’s comments have put their quaint little town on the map for the wrong reasons.
And while Shubert was made what some considered to be bizarre statements in the past, this one was huge.
Resident Andrea Bucey says the mayor needed to go, adding “we are looking forward to a better replacement.”
Hudson City Council President Chris Foster says that Shubert did the right thing by resigning and that the former mayor should be forgiven.
“He recognized this became a distraction and he did the right thing," Foster said.
So, what comes next? Council members and residents are hoping to move forward and find a mayor who will leave the fish tales on the water.
