Mansfield police officer accidentally shoots himself while responding to possible burglary

MANSFIELD, Ohio — A Mansfield police officer is recovering after he accidentally shot himself while responding to an alleged burglary on Friday morning. 

Mansfield police officials say the incident happened at around 10:06 a.m. when officers were responding to 96 Lind Avenue for a possible burglary.

When officer Charles Hamilton approached the scene, he drew his service weapon and it accidentally discharged, striking him in the right leg. 

Hamilton, who has been a member of the Mansfield Police Department since 2013, was taken to the OhioHealth emergency department, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

No other information on the situation has been released.
