MANSFIELD - A man is dead after a Thursday afternoon shooting on Bowman Street, and the suspect, considered armed and dangerous, remains at large, according to police.

Nolan Lovett, 32, was taken to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead a short time later, Mansfield Police Captain Shari said in a press release.

According to the press release, the city's dispatch center received several 911 calls around 2:15 p.m. Thursday that someone was shot in the 700 block of Bowman Street.

When officers arrived, they found Lovett lying in front of 737 Bowman St. with at least one gunshot wound to his chest.

Witnesses reported there was a "short verbal altercation" between Lovett and the suspect before the suspect pulled out the gun and shot him, according to the press release.

The suspect fled the area on foot after the shooting, according to the press release. Police report the suspect is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

Witnesses said the suspect was wearing a gray hoodie and dark-colored pants or jeans, possibly blue or black.

Robertson said in the press release the police department is investigating the incident as a homicide. Several firearms were recovered at the scene.

At the scene Thursday afternoon, Mansfield Police Chief Ken Coontz said the shooting happened in the yard and driveway area of the residence, near the U.S. 30 underpass, after a "brief dispute."

A black Ford Fusion in the driveway appeared to have been involved in the shooting. Coontz said the driver of the vehicle may have been a shooter.

Coontz said it appeared that after the shooting, the driver of the black car fled on foot toward the rear of the house.

"We're still trying to identify who the person that was in the black car that was shooting," Coontz said earlier at the scene. "He's definitely the person that we're trying to locate."

A gray Ford Taurus parked on the sidewalk near the house appeared to have driven up during or just after the shooting, Coontz said.

Coontz said a couple of people found at the scene had been taken to the police department for questioning.

He added he didn't know what connection, if any, any of the people involved had to the Bowman Street residence.

Police officers found shell casings at the foot of the driveway, Coontz said. Officers were searching in the area to see if anything had been discarded.

"it's very preliminary, and there's a lot to sort through right now," Coontz said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Bill Bushong at 419-755-9432 or Lt. Rob Skropits at 419-755-9755.
