Middleburg Heights family claims they've been victimized by hate crimes for years

They say they've been targeted for years.

A Middleburg Heights family claims they’ve been victimized by a hate crime.

But there's an unusual twist in this case.

People are questioning whether the couple is telling the truth, including the police.

"We’re an open book right now. There's nothing we're trying to hide or cover up," Dawn Mahon Berry told me

She and her husband Carlos deny the posts on social media.

Posts accusing them of trying to get sympathy for donations to help keep their home from going into foreclosure, or for money to help Carlos to pay back child support.

Some calling their claims of hate crimes a scam. Despite photos which show a sock puppet hanging from a noose, their car torched, racial epithets spray painted on their home and violent break-ins resulting in Carlos being stabbed in the shoulder.

The Middleburg Heights family says it's been going on since they moved in seven years ago.

But they believe there's more to this than hate crimes.

"We've been trying to get help since this started and nobody would assist," said Carlos.

Police Chief Ed Tomba told us by phone that there are a lot of questions surrounding this.

He cites the family’s unwillingness to hand over security camera video. They say it’s because vandals broke them so many times they have no video.

He also says they’ve refused to give DNA, so police can rule out family members.

Carlos say the reason is "Cause I don't trust them one bit. I'm not subjecting my family to DNA fingerprints so they can place them somewhere else."

We could not reach the Chief for a comment on that, or their allegations that police are targeting them as well, including their kids being followed around town.

"It's almost like they know his schedule. Sure enough every two to three weeks he's being pulled over," Dawn said referring to her son.

Neighbors were adamant about not being on camera, only denying this would happen in their neighborhood.

One telling me she didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked about the graffiti that was clearly spray painted across the Berry’s garage.

According to the family, many have been less than welcoming. Shortly after moving in Dawn says a neighbor told her, "Out of the 32 years I've been living here...I never thought I'd be living next to blacks.”

Police say 32 calls for service were made to the home since 2015. We went through most of them and they were primarily reports of burglary and a call that someone had broken in the home, beat up Dawn and tied her up.
