Northeast Ohio communities hold Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies

After the pandemic forced many to modify events over the last two years, this year's Memorial Day events brought big crowds and big messages.

CLEVELAND — Many ceremonies and celebrations were held across Northeast Ohio on Memorial Day to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price and laid down their lives for the freedom of our nation.

Our own Leon Bibb, himself a Vietnam War veteran, served as guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony in Shaker Heights outside city hall. Leon touched on his service and why it's important to celebrate, yet remember this day.

"We may have a soft drink or two in my backyard to do that, we may well do that. But before I do that, I always pay my respects to those who did not come back from war. I'm so pleased that my dad was able to come back from war. If he had not come back, I would not be your speaker today," Leon told the gathering.

Public Square in downtown Cleveland was full of American flags and shows of gratitude for our men and women in uniform. Lt. Col. Justin Herdman of the US Air Force Reserve served as guest speaker.

3News' Mark Naymik spent time in Brecksville, where a community was able to gather and celebrate again. "After two years without Memorial Day, without our parade and without our ceremony, we have returned to tradition," said Brecksville Mayor Jerry Hruby.
