'Sad and unfortunate news': Norwayne Middle School student dies in Wayne County car crash

The student who was killed in the crash has been identified as 14-year-old Aurora Krahenbuhl. Four other students were injured in the single-car accident.

CRESTON, Ohio — A Norwayne Middle School student was killed on Friday in a single-car accident, according to the district's superintendent.

The student has been identified by the Ohio State Highway Patrol as 14-year-old Aurora Krahenbuhl of Creston.

"Within the past hour I received word that 5 Hs (high school)/Ms (middle school) students were involved in a single car accident. Resulting in the passing of one of our Ms students," Norwayne Superintendent Kevin Leatherman wrote in a Friday evening letter to district students, staff, and community members.

Leatherman also announced that the Friday night homecoming football game between Norwayne High School and Chippewa High School was canceled.

"Please keep all of our students and families in your thoughts and prayers," Leatherman added. 

According to the OSHP, the incident happened on Friday afternoon just before 4:15 p.m. A 2007 Honda Civic being driven by a 17-year-old was heading north on Canaan Center Road near East Sterling Road in Canaan Township in Wayne County. 

"The Honda lost control and traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a ditch and two landscape islands before overturning multiple times prior to coming to final rest," OSHP officials told 3News in an email. 

Troopers say the driver of the Civic was taken by ambulance to Wooster Community Hospital for minor injuries. A 15-year-old passenger was transported by ground ambulance to Wooster Community Hospital with serious injuries before being flown by air ambulance to Akron Children’s Hospital. 

Two other passengers, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, were transported to Lodi Hospital and Cleveland Clinic - Medina Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
