Ohio State Highway Patrol: Akron man dies after being struck on I-77 in Tuscarawas County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the driver who hit the man was not injured or cited.

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating after an Akron man was struck and killed on I-77 in Tuscarawas County.

The deadly incident happened on Sunday, July 21, at around 10:02 a.m. on I-77 in Lawrence Township.

OSHP officials say a 2021 Volvo commercial vehicle was driving southbound on I-77 when a 34-year-old Akron man walked into the roadway in front of the vehicle.

The man, identified as Jonathan Mandala, was transported by Bolivar EMS to Mercy Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries

Police say the driver of the Volvo was not cited or injured in the incident. 

OSHP was assisted at the scene by Bolivar EMS/FD, the Bolivar Police Department and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office. 

At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
