BEACHWOOD, Ohio — On Sunday, The Gathering Place's annual 'Race for the Place' kicked off in Cleveland, bringing Northeast Ohioans from all walks of life to Beachwood to rally in support of cancer survivors.
"It's a wonderful celebration of survivors and an opportunity to raise money to support the free programs and services provided at The Gathering Place to help children, teens, adults, individuals, families and friends cope while on the cancer journey," a description of the event says on The Gathering Place's website.
The Gathering Place is an organization that works to provide resources, support and education to anyone who is dealing with the impact of a cancer diagnosis.
"We want to show being diagnosed with cancer, people in treatment or on their cancer journey that we're here to support them," said Claire Anter, marketing director for The Gathering Place. "Our programs and services are free to anyone on the journey, patient, caregiver, we are there to serve anyone."
The event was held on National Cancer Survivors Day, marked each year by the first Sunday in June. This year, the event also included a parade and a virtual celebration, emceed by 3News' Laura Caso.
Members of the Solon High School marching band, as well as the Beachwood Fire Department and Mayor Martin Horwitz, turned up to take part in the celebration.
