CLEVELAND — After conflicting reports about plans for its future, the Sokolowski family has announced plans to sell its iconic University Inn after almost 100 years of serving customers in Cleveland.
On Wednesday, owners Bernie, Mary, and Mike Sokolowski issued a joint statement to 3News announcing the move to sell the property.
"After nearly 100 years in business, the Sokolowski Family has decided to list the property for sale. We firmly believe that there is going to be a significant amount of interest in the iconic location. However, we are ready to reopen the business if a suitable deal and buyer are not forthcoming. We do feel that the time is right for our family to now enjoy the fruits of our labor. Our hope is that there is a buyer that will be eager to continue to use this landmark property in a form that does justice to its past."
On Tuesday, Ideastream reported that Sokolowski's, located in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood, will close permanently after being shuttered by the pandemic back in March.
In the article, the owner, Bernie Sokolowoski is quoted saying, “There wasn't enough volume of business coming in. We weren't making enough to cover a lot of our expenses."
However, 3News reached out to Bernie via phone who said that all is not said and done for the iconic eatery. Co-owner Mike Sokolowski confirmed the family would issue a statement on Wednesday.
The award-winning family owned restaurant began serving customers back in 1923. Growing in popularity among locals and visitors, the 2014 James Beard “American Classics” Award winner specializes in Polish and Eastern European cuisine, including favorites like salisbury steak, chicken paprikash, stuffed cabbage, and of course, their classic mouth-watering pierogi.
