SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — An investigation is underway after one person died and two others were injured in a fire at a home in South Euclid.
The South Euclid Fire Department says the fire happened on Monday at a duplex home on Ardmore Road.
Before arriving at the scene, firefighters learned that three occupants needed to be rescued from the second floor. When crews arrived at the fire, they discovered dark black smoke coming out of a second-floor window.
The South Euclid Fire Department reported that all occupants were removed from the house, but one person died and two others are still hospitalized.
Fire officials say that working smoke alarms alerted the family to evacuate the home. However, some occupants stayed longer to retrieve their belongings.
"Today is a great day to check your smoke alarms and create a home escape plan if one is not in place,' said The South Euclid Fire Department on Facebook. "Always remember that once you are safely out of your home during smoke conditions never go back in for any reason."
Currently, the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal.
Numerous other fire departments, including Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Lyndhurst, Beachwood, Warrensville, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Richmond Heights, Willoughby Hills, Highland Heights, East Cleveland, and University Heights, assisted the South Euclid Fire Department at the scene.
