SHERRODSVILLE, Ohio — The organizer of a Tuscarawas County Toys for Tots drive is reeling today after a fire destroyed a garage housing donations for the Christmas gift program.
According to Robert Stratton, a Marine veteran who organizes a yearly drive in Tuscarawas County, the fire broke out around 4 p.m. Monday on Dana Road in Sherrodsville, located in Carroll County.
Numerous fire departments were called to the scene, but were unable to salvage the estimated $8,000 worth of toys and donations that were inside, according to Stratton.
The Carroll County resident, who also owns Lincolns and Things in Sherrodsville, says that cars and repair equipment were damaged in the blaze, as well.
A Toys for Tots delivery from the national center arrived in Northeast Ohio today, Stratton says, and more than a dozen neighbors came out to the Calvary United Methodist Church to help unload the new shipment. The goodwill didn't end there, though.
Local businesses and residents have offered to help with the donations, as well, Stratton says.
Simpson Heating and Air in New Philadelphia will be holding a toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots at Tuscora Park on Dec. 12. The company announced it will match each toy donated.
At this time, there is no word on what caused the fire. The matter remains under investigation by officials.
