Officials say the accident happened on Sunday at around 3:05 a.m. on Apple Creek Road when a Ford F-250 traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a ditch, culvert, utility pole and railroad crossing gate before overturning on the railroad tracks.

The driver, 24-year-old Jason Elder of Sterling, who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Wayne County Coroner's Office.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials say Apple Creek Road is closed for utility and railroad track repairs.

The crash remains under investigation, but alcohol is being considered as a factor in the accident.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Central Fire and EMS, Norfolk Southern Railroad, and AEP Utilities.
