DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — An Atlanta Police Department officer died after being shot by a homeowner on Friday morning, according to authorities.

The officer was identified as Investigator Aubree Horton, who joined APD in November 2015 and was most recently assigned to the department’s Fugitive Unit.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to a home on Orkney Way in Winston, Georgia, around 5 a.m. regarding a shooting. Investigators said Horton, who appeared on video to be experiencing a mental health episode or under the influence of narcotics, tried to break into a home in the neighborhood.

Horton, who lives in the same neighborhood according to tax records, was able to enter the home and was confronted by the homeowner, who shot him in self-defense.

According to a Facebook post from APD, Horton had just received an award for Investigator of the Year.
