COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio family whose 1-year-old son is waiting for a heart transplant received a generous donation after their car was recently totaled in a crash.
Outside of Nationwide Children's Hospital on Thursday, Rayshaun and Michelle Evans got the keys to their new Subaru.
The Evans family said when their son Shaun was 6 months old, they noticed he was getting sick a lot. After a few trips to the emergency room and several visits to a doctor, they were told Shaun had an enlarged heart and that he was in heart failure.
The family moved from Cleveland into a Ronald McDonald House next to Nationwide Children's Hospital where Shaun is getting care.
The crash happened a few weeks ago and since then, Michelle was having to take an Uber back and forth to her new job.
Byer's Automotive heard about her story and donated a Subaru Forester to the family.
"We are just overwhelmed and overjoyed. Just really appreciative and ultimately thankful," Rayshaun said. "It's been a long road. Just to know that people are out there that care means just so much to us."
Rayshaun and Michelle say Shaun is doing well. They say he's laughing and walking a lot more than he used to. He's also enjoying his therapy sessions.
The family says they are in good spirits and they are looking forward to the day when Shaun can get a new heart and they can go home.
