11-year-old girl drowns while attempting to save little sister from hotel pool

The 9-year-old girl was resuscitated before the rescue squad. She was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center by her father.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An 11-year-old girl drowned in a hotel pool in Scioto County after attempting to save her little sister from drowning, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident happened at the Quality Inn in Wheelersburg on Sunday. A rescue squad was sent to the hotel along with a deputy from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for a report of two drownings.

Investigators learned that the two sisters, ages 9 and 11, were at a pool party when the younger sister fell into the water. The 11-year-old girl attempted to pull her out of the pool but was unsuccessful and also fell in.

The two girls were pulled from the pool and people in the area performed CPR while 911 was called, according to the sheriff’s office.

The 9-year-old was resuscitated before the rescue squad arrived. She was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center by her father.

The 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital while medics continued CPR and life-saving efforts. She was later pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office.

This is still an ongoing investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Detective Tackett-Dye at 740-351-1099.
