2 dead in Central Ohio plane crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is working to notify next of kin before releasing the identities of the victims.

MADISON COUNTY, Ohio — Two people were killed in a plane crash in Madison County Tuesday evening. 

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said authorities were called to Madison County Airport in London for the crash around 6:20 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the plane, a single-engine Cessna, crashed near the runway, clipped its left wing, inverted and caused substantial damage. The plane was on its top when troopers arrived.

Authorities believe they were trying to land the plane when the crash occurred.

The left-seat occupant of the plane was identified as 43-year-old Athar Mohammad Ashraf, of Columbus, according to OSHP. The other victim was identified as 60-year-old Malik Aftab Naseem, of Jasper, Alabama.

NTSB is investigating the crash. The airport remains closed.
