GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On July 2, the state of Ohio changed the process for obtaining an Ohio driver’s licenses and identification cards.
While much of the process remains unchanged, there are some minor differences.
If you need to obtain or renew your ID, we suggest you follow the checklist below:
- Understand the difference between a compliant and standard ID card. Ohio offers both.
Starting in October 2020, federal restrictions will require a Compliant ID to access federal facilities and to fly domestically. A strict list of documents is required to obtain a Compliant ID.
If you don’t require a Compliant ID, you can opt for the Standard. No additional documentation is required (if renewing your ID) and it can be used to identify yourself in most situations. The cost is the same for both.

- Head to the nearest Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
- Be prepared to fill out a form at the BMV verifying your information, and pay the required fees.
- Your photo will be taken for your new ID.
- You will then be issued a temporary paper ID. Your old ID (if renewing) is perforated in the corner and returned to you. Keep both of these together until you receive your new ID.
- Wait approximately 10 days for your new ID to arrive by mail. Only then should you get rid of the temporary paper ID and your old ID.
Ohio changed the identification process in order to comply with federal standards. In doing so, they also switched delivery by mail, a process in use by many other states around the country.
And for those worried about theft, remember passports and credit cards are also delivered the same way. There is no alternative for the method that is used now.
