Delaware County resident describes startling moment EF1 tornado hit with no warning

Delaware County resident Earnest Harris said the tornado sirens did not go off in the area.

DELAWARE COUNTY, Ohio — The National Weather Service confirmed five tornadoes touched down across Ohio following Wednesday evening’s storms. An EF1 tornado was confirmed in Delaware County, with most of the damage impacting homes along Fancher Road.

"There were no sirens, there was no warning,” said Earnest Harris, who lives along Fancher Road.

Along Harris’ street, trees can be seen split in half, parts of roofs are scattered throughout lawns and even a trampoline can be seen on its side entangled in a tree.

"I was just startled more than anything else,” Harris said.

Harris said he had just got home from work around 5:30 p.m. as the storm rolled in.

"Actually, walked in the house and I saw some furniture rolling out the back along the fence line,” Harris said.

He was about to go outside through the back door to check it out, but he was stopped in his tracks.

"It was an explosion,” Harris said.

That explosion was caused by a piece of his neighbor’s roof that came crashing through his back sliding glass doors.

"I wasn't really scared because it happened so fast,” Harris said.

Harris’ indoor security camera showed the moment he started heading to the back door as that piece of roof came crashing through the back of his home.

"When I saw the glass explode you know I said let's get to the basement,” Harris said.

The National Weather Service reported wind speeds reached up to 90 mph. As Harris surveyed his own damage, he realized his neighbor’s home was hit much worse.

"Their garage was actually knocked off of the foundation and their gas line was compromised and so they had to turn the power off and actually leave the premises,” Harris said.

As crews start to repair the damage, Harris acknowledges all of it can be replaced.

"There was no warning, and for no one to be hurt, all I can think about is how good God is. It could've been far worse,” Harris said.
