COLUMBUS, Ohio — Earlier this month, Dollar Tree announced plans to close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year and 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years.
Ohio is about to feel the impact.
In a letter to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, Family Dollar Vice President of Human Services Michael Atcovitz stated that the company "intends to close multiple stores in Ohio." Atcovitz added that the closing of the stores will result in the layoff of "some or all of" 265 employees.
Atcovitz told Ohio officials that the layoffs are expected to happen on or before April 20. He added that Family Dollar would "attempt to offer positions at nearby stores to employees of the closing stores who express interest in new positions."
Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar for more than $8 billion in 2015 after a bidding war with rival Dollar General, but it has had difficulty absorbing the chain. Earlier this week, Dollar Tree announced that it will raise the maximum price of items in its stores nationwide to $7 by the end of the year.
