How close are Ohioans to legally wagering on sporting events? Answer remains in limbo

Lawmakers and the governor have not been able to agree on what agency should oversee sports betting in Ohio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — With the Super Bowl and March Madness around the corner, how soon will Ohioans be able to place a legal bet on sporting event in the state?

It appears that question remains in limbo as lawmakers and the governor have not been able to agree on what agency should oversee sports betting in Ohio.

Senators want the Ohio Casino Control Commission, while House members favor the Ohio Lottery Commission.

The House version (HB 194) received eight committee hearings but the bill hasn't had a hearing since December.

The Senate version (SB 111) received two hearings out of concern over expanding gambling in Ohio.

Among the unresolved issues is whether sports betting should be opened to small businesses like bowling alleys and bars.

Both the Senate and House versions would allow for mobile betting. Gov. Mike DeWine was quoted as saying he favors sports betting in casinos and racinos. The state would levy a 6.25% tax on winnings with the proceeds going to the state's general fund.

In a statement to 10TV, the Governor's office said, "the Governor believes sports gaming is coming to Ohio. His preference is that the General Assembly establish regulations as opposed to a special interest ballot initiative. Our office remains engaged with the General Assembly as they continue deliberations."

The state of Michigan recently legalized retail and online sports wagering. Kentucky is also nearing approval of sports betting.
