Local company, LeafFilter, aids giraffe conservation with new addition to Columbus Zoo

Digi is a six-year-old female and she was brought to the Columbus Zoo in efforts to promote conservation of this very vulnerable species.

All eyes were on the Heart of Africa exhibit, everyone clambering to get a look at Digi, the newest giraffe at the Columbus Zoo.

LeafFilter, a Hudson based company, sponsored Digi’s move to her new home.

So how do you get from a gutter protection product to a giraffe? You motivate co-workers to reach a tall goal.

“We said lets do something crazy, if we do 5 time what we are doing now, let’s get a giraffe. We actually hit that number last fall so I had to go searching for a giraffe,” said Matt Kaulig the Founder and CEO of LeafFilter.

Digi is a six-year-old female and she was brought to the Columbus Zoo in efforts to promote conservation of this very vulnerable species.

“Over the past 30 years we have lost over 40% of the entire population so having Digi here, we are able to teach people and education people about the plight that is happening with giraffe,” said Shannon Morarity, the Assist Curator of the Heart of Africa at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Over 400 LeafFilter employees and their families celebrated with food, fun and the newest family member Digi the giraffe.

It’s been more than 20 years since the Columbus Zoo has had a baby giraffe arrive. So everyone is hopeful for good things to come.

“So she has a mate here, if you will, his name is Enzy. So in the next few years we hope she gets pregnant,” said Morarity.

“And so we do hope to have little giraffe babies. That would be great,” remarked Kaulig.
