15-year-old boy dead after drowning at Monroe County campground

The victim was taken to Toledo Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

PETERSBURG, Mich. — A teenager is dead after drowning at the KOA campground in Petersburg, Michigan on Saturday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Monroe County Central Dispatch received a call to the KOA campground on the 15000 block of Tunnicliffe Road around 5:23 p.m.

Police say a 15-year-old male had been missing for approximately 20 minutes and his last known location was in the swimming pond.

Members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office as well as members of the Summerfield Township Fire Department arrived on scene and began a search of the swimming pond.

Deputy Dave Moore was the first dive team member of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Dive Team to arrive on scene. Within minutes, Deputy
Moore located the victim, Jaylen Christopher Hill, 15, of Detroit.

Hill was taken to Toledo Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

This is not the first water rescue or drowning incident at the campground in recent years.

In June of 2021, a dive team rescued a teenager who was swimming in the campground’s pond.

Andy Snook went missing for 20-30 minutes in that incident.

Since then, Andy's parents, Dave and Heather Snook, have been trying to make other families aware of what they feel are potential issues at the campground.

On Sunday, they say their thoughts and prayers are with the Hill's family.

"We knew what this mother and this family was going through. We absolutely did because they had originally told us that Andy had died," said Dave Snook. "So it just absolutely killed me to think what this poor lady and this father are going through and these poor people. And this young boy that I saw online he looked like a beautiful kid, he really did."

In an earlier incident in 2011, a 39-year-old man died after drowning at the campground.

Saturday’s incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is encouraged to contact Deputy Yuchuck at 734-240-7534.
