Ohio State Highway Patrol urges sober driving as Christmas approaches

According to OSHP, 10 fatal crashes killed 12 people during the four-day holiday period in 2020.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As Christmas weekend approaches, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has a message for drivers urging safe travels during the holiday season.

OSHP reminds vehicle operators to drive sober in order to reduce the number of fatal and injury-related crashes around Christmas

According to OSHP, in 2020, 10 fatal crashes killed 12 people during the four-day holiday period.

“As usual, we expect traffic to pick up as holiday celebrations begin and being responsible when traveling to and from holiday gatherings is key to everyone’s safety,” Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said in a statement. “Please don’t forget to wear your seatbelt, and if you plan on drinking, please designate a driver.”

Last year’s reporting period for OSHP ran from Dec. 24 until Dec. 27. In that timeframe, OSHP made 145 arrests for individuals operating vehicles under the influence (OVI).

This year, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s reporting period will occur from Thursday, Dec. 23, until Sunday, Dec. 26.

OSHP encourages those consuming alcohol to designate a sober driver or make other arrangements, such as using a ride-sharing app to get home safely.

“Designating a sober driver is the smartest decision motorists can make,” said Colonel Richard S. Fambro. “Ensuring everyone’s safety while traveling on Ohio’s roadways is our priority.”

If you are on the road and see an impaired driver, OSHP encourages you to report their behavior by calling #667.

Additional information and statistics are available on the OSHP Crash Dashboard.
