Put-in-Bay community remembers 'island legend' Pat Dailey

Dailey, often referred to as the "Jimmy Buffet of the North," was locally famous for his Put-in-Bay performances and songs about the island and the Lake Erie area.

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — A beloved northwest Ohio singer-songwriter who died earlier this week was remembered Friday by the Put-in-Bay community, which he entertained for decades with his songs about their island and the lake it sits on.

Pat Dailey, 83, died peacefully Wednesday night "surrounded by the family he loved," his son announced on Facebook on Thursday.

"It's a loss for the island and the music industry," said frequent Put-in-Bay visitor Diana Nemec.

Dailey was often referred to as the "Jimmy Buffet of the North"  and his songs often referenced South Bass Island and Lake Erie.

"Probably everyone has had a toast to Pat Dailey on the island," said Caroline Conrad, a bartender at the downtown Put-in-Bay bar Tipper's.

Next door to Tipper's is the Beer Barrell Saloon, a bar known for its live music, especially that of Dailey's.

Conrad has been on Put-in-Bay for a while, but has watched Dailey perform for much longer at locations like the Beer Barrel Saloon.

"I got my house in 2001, but I've been watching Pat Dailey since 1989," she said.

Andrew Christensen, the owner of Reel Bar, knew Dailey well.

"It was a real honor to know an island legend, to get his wisdom, to have his friendship and guidance at times," he said.

Covers of Dailey's music were played at Reel Bar on Friday to remember the singer-songwriter.

Christensen said while Dailey may no longer be around to sing to crowds, his tunes will live on forever.

"Pick up his music and listen," Christensen said. "Anyone that's just learning about Put-in-Bay, listen to it. If you love the island, you'll love his music."
