Tragedy in Ohio: WKYC's Russ Mitchell reports from Dayton after deadly mass shooting

Team coverage from Dayton.

DAYTON, Ohio — Our own Russ Mitchell arrived in Dayton just hours after the shooting took place Sunday where nine people lost their lives.

During his time there, he met an Akron native who now lives right across the street from where the shooting took place.

“I moved to Dayton six months ago. I’ve lived through a tornado, the KKK rally and now this. Dayton has pulled together after every one of those horrific events," Wes Freeman told Russ.

He told Russ that the gunshots initially sounded like fireworks before the feeling of panic set in.

“I went over the convention center, and that’s when I started contacting my loved ones back home and letting them know what was going on. No one really had a full understanding of what took place.”

Monday morning, Russ led our team coverage from Dayton with reporter Jasmine Monroe where they detailed what we've learned in the overnight hours and showed how the community is healing together.
