More viewers stepping up to donate face masks for Cleveland Food Bank

Betsy Kling's call to action has netted at least 1,800 masks; more are needed to protect workers and volunteers at food distribution sites

CLEVELAND — Our 3NEWS effort to collect 10,000 face masks for Greater Cleveland Food Bank workers is gaining steam as it rolls on.

Parma 7-11 owner Adam Radogna is one of the latest to join the bandwagon.

He told Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling this week during a Zoom interview that he will donate 1,000 disposable masks and 100 washable ones to our wkyc studios collection drive.

That brings our total to more than 1,800 masks, to be given to the Food Bank to protect those on the front lines of its vast distribution network.

But many more are needed. And handmade masks are encouraged and enthusiastically welcomed.

Food bank spokeswoman Karen Pozna told 3NEWS that at least 10,000 reusable masks are needed -- for  workers at the 800 food distribution sites that are presently open and for those who staff the 200 additional programs that will be coming back online soon. Also, masks are needed for the food bank’s army of volunteers who have been sidelined since the pandemic began. Soon, she said, volunteers will be allowed “back in the building to pack, sort and help us get food out the door,” and the food bank wants to make sure they’re properly protected too.
