WKYC Studios helps sign up mentors for kids heading to college this year

As a freshman, it’s tough to navigate college, especially since you are on your own for the first time. That’s why College Now of Greater Cleveland needs mentors.

On Monday, Jan. 27, WKYC Studios partnered with College Now of Greater Cleveland to help spread the word that mentors are needed for kids heading to college this fall.

Over 1,000 people are needed. That’s because Cleveland is now a “Say Yes to Education” city and eligible Cleveland Metropolitan School District kids can get free college tuition but as part of that scholarship, they need a mentor. For the second year in a row, CMSD CEO Eric Gordon is asking his employees to sign up. As of now, 36 of them have answered that call.

The basic requirement is you need a college degree.

So, what’s it like being a mentor? You can hear from three CMSD employees that signed up last year in the player above. If you decide to be a mentor, you can sign up at www.collegenowgc.org. The deadline is March 1.
