Officials say the crash happened on Hopkins Road, north of Pierce Road in Nelson Township, at around 12:33 a.m. when a 1998 Buick Century drove off the road and struck a utility pole.

The driver, who has been identified as Thomas Dorsey of Garrettsville, was taken to University Hospital in Geauga County, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials say Dorsey was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, but they are unsure if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Police say that Hopkins Road closed for a short time as a result of the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Portage County Sheriff's Office, Portage County Coroner's Office, Garrettsville Join Fire District, Community District EMS, Gateway Towing and Ohio Edison.
