Portage APL rescues over 180 animals from 'horrendous living conditions'

The Portage Animal Protective League is asking for donations to help with the 'extraordinary' care costs for the rescued animals.

RAVENNA, Ohio — The Portage Animal Protective League is asking for help from the community after rescuing over 180 animals from "horrendous living conditions."

According to a release from the APL, all of the animals were removed from "unsanitary, filthy conditions without appropriate food." In addition, many of the animals were underweight with injuries and illness.

Following the rescue, the Portage APL is now asking for donations, as the costs of caring for the animals will be "extraordinary." Anyone interested in donating can click HERE

"One baby cow was unable to stand from being so malnourished. Cats, dogs, bunnies, birds and guinea pigs were all inside the home where there was no food or water available to them. Some of the caged animals were sitting in large amounts of waste with empty bowls. The floors of the home were covered in waste. The horses and goats were so hungry they had eaten the bark off of the trees in the paddock, and some animals resembled skeletons," said the Portage Animal Protective League in a release.

The following animals were all rescued from the home:

  • 4 horses
  • 1 donkey
  • 5 mini horses
  • 2 sheep
  • 2 cows

According to officials, all of the animals are now receiving care and are being medically evaluated.

“This was a tough case for many reasons. The conditions these poor animals were living in were unacceptable and cruel. Also, Portage APL cannot accommodate that many animals in our shelter and we needed help to get the animals out of that environment," said Chalan Lowry. “Several other organizations responded to our pleas for assistance, and we couldn’t be more grateful for such a caring network of friends!”

At this time, the investigation remains active.
