Portage County: Elderly man struck and killed in Ravenna Township

Witnesses say he was struck while crossing the street to get his mail.

Troopers from the Ravenna Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating after a pedestrian was struck Thursday afternoon. It happened on Summit Rd. just west of South Prospect St. in Ravenna Township.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Louive of the Ravenna post said that 83-year-old George Howard of Ravenna had crossed the street to get his mail and as he was crossing back, he was struck by a vehicle.

Troopers say the vehicle was being driven by a 24-year-old female from Newton Falls. She was traveling west on Summit Rd. when Howard was struck.

Mr. Howard was transported to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna with severe injuries. A spokesman for the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office confirms Howard did pass away from his injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
