Streetsboro firefighter in intensive care after collapsing during training

"Our Brother is currently in the intensive care unit receiving top notch medical attention from the staff at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center."

STREETSBORO, Ohio — A member of the Streetsboro Fire Department is in intensive care at a Portage County hospital after collapsing during a training session and being given cardiac life support.

According to a Facebook post from the Streetsboro Fire Department, the incident happened at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Monday. The firefighter apparently collapsed at the station while attending an EMS training session.

"Advanced cardiac life support" was given to the firefighter along with assistance from the department's medical control physician who was giving a presentation when the incident took place.

The male firefighter, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center (UHPMC), where Streetsboro fire officials say his pulse and respirations were regained. He was also sent to the hospital's cardiac catheterization lab for additional care. "Our Brother is currently in the intensive care unit receiving top notch medical attention from the staff at UHPMC," the department added in its Facebook post.

The Streetsboro Fire Department also thanked the fire departments from Kent and Ravenna for sending assistance to help cover its call volume, plus the members of the Streetsboro Police Department for offering support.

The department added that Streetsboro firefighters were called in to relieve those who were on duty during the incident "so that they may continue to decompress and cope with this event. Again, our Brother remains in the care of the medical team at UHPMC. Please keep him, his family, and his fire station family in your thoughts and prayers."
