Juneteenth celebration in Portage County broken up by law enforcement agencies after reports of shots fired

The Portage County Sheriff's Office wrote in a post on Facebook that deputies observed roughly 2,000 people in attendance.

PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio — Editor's note: The video in the player above is from a story published on Jan. 4, 2021. 

The Portage County Sheriff's Office over the weekend was called to Wingfoot Lake Park in Suffield Township late Saturday night to deal with reports of shots fired and visible firearms in a large crowd.  

According to a release posted to Facebook, the Portage County Sheriff's Office, Summit County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Mogadore Police, Springfield Police, Hartville Police, Lakemore Police and members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol were all dispatched to the Suffield Township park where roughly 2,000 people were attending a Juneteenth celebration.

Police first reported the disturbances around 9 p.m., according to officials, and by 11 p.m., law enforcement agencies said that they had evacuated the party and dispersed the large crowd. No injuries were reported. 

At this time, no more information has been made publicly available. 

"The Portage County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the Summit County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Mogadore Police, Springfield Police, Hartville Police, Lakemore Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers from Summit, Stark and Portage County Posts, and the K9 units for assisting with this matter," said Portage County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Ralph Spidalieri. 

The matter remains under investigation at this time.
