The Canton City School District will not renew the contract of Superintendent Adrian E. Allison, the board of education announced Saturday.

The board, which has yet to give a reason for Allison's departure, issued the following statement via member Richard Milligan:

"The Canton City Schools Board of Education is authorizing the president of the board to enter into a tentative transition agreement pending counsel approval that will lead to the departure of Adrian Allison from the district retroactive to Jan. 4, 2019. The Board expresses its thanks to Supt. Allison for his years of service and wishes him well in the future. The Board will have no further comment at this time."

Allison, a 1990 graduate of Canton McKinley High School, was the first African American superintendent in the district's history. He was signed to an "unprecedented" five-year contract in January of 2013, according to the district's website.
