CLEVELAND — A Canton man died Friday after a driver crashed into the front of a Stark County restaurant, Jackson Township police said.

According to police, the crash happened at around 11:55 a.m.

Andrew Grosschmidt, 69, died from his injuries at a Canton hospital hours after after he was pinned between the car and the counter at Angello's 2 Go on Fulton Drive.

According to police, an 81-year-old Canal Fulton woman was attempting to pull a 2018 Toyota SUV into a parking spot in front of the restaurant.

"She advised officers that she thought she was applying the brake pedal but in fact still had her foot on the gas pedal," the police department said in a release.

Firefighters were able to extricate Grosschmidt from between the car and the counter and transported him to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center. Police said Grosschmidt died "later that evening."

Police said Grosschmidt's granddaughter was at the restaurant at the time of the incident. She was not injured, police said.

The driver was treated at the scene and released, police said. According to police, no one else was injured.

Police said charges are "pending at this time."

The incident is still under investigation but police noted alcohol or drugs are not believed to have factored into the crash.
